Facing the prospect of spinal surgery can be a nerve wracking, yet relieving experience. On one hand, there is finally hope that you will be cured from incessant pain, on the other, one cannot help but worry about the process.
Often questions arise, “Should I go with a more traditional surgery or should I try a minimally invasive procedure?” Here at Manalapan Surgery Center, Dr. Scott Katzman, Dr. Jeffrey Oppenheimer and Dr. Steven Schiebert believe that minimally invasive spinal surgery may be the answer you have been searching for.
A revolutionary approach, minimally invasive spinal surgery is becoming the new medical standard. Having performed countless of these surgeries to date, Manalapan Surgery Center takes pride in its longstanding and successful track record.
According to the Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques, a study was conducted in 2007, which compared the success rate of traditional open-‐ back surgery to minimally invasive spine surgery, the numbers where a whopping 41% to 87% success rate, respectively. That means that minimally invasive spinal surgery is over two times more successful.
By its very nature, minimally invasive surgery is considerably more sparing. Since a typical open-back surgery requires an incision of 5-7 inches, it is less traumatizing and cosmetically more pleasing to opt for the minimally invasive 1 inch incision. During the surgery, our surgeons expertly navigate the tissue using small dilating tubes. Taking great care, they delicately spread and part the muscles, as oppose to cutting, which ensure that any additional trauma is spared to they body. Once the procedure is complete, the surgeon gently removes all instruments and eases the tissue back into place.
Here at Manalapan Surgery Center, our patients have noted a quick return to their normal, active lives. Unlike traditional open back surgery, which requires a minimum two to three days of post treatment hospitalization, our minimally invasive spinal surgeries are often performed in an outpatient setting and do not require any hospital stay. Thus, jumping back into, “life as usual” is no longer an unreasonable dream, rather a convenient reality. We attribute this to the gentle approach that minimally invasive surgery grants us. With it comes the opportunity to decrease blood loss, pain, scar tissue and healing time.
From a financial standpoint, minimally invasive spinal surgery soars about traditional open back surgery. By cutting out hospital stay, minimizing physical therapy and reducing healing time, our patients save money and time. Want more information?
